"Two Figures in a Stormy Landscape" by William Zorach, Amer., (1887-1966)
Linocut, ca. 1916, Burke, pg. 225, ZPL 50, Edition of 3 known impressions, 7-9/16 x 2-5/8, signed in pencil, on cream japan paper, small printing crease in image upper left, some marginal foxing, a fine and well inked impression of this stunning and very rare print. Ex-coll. Helen Farr Sloan. According to Efram Burke, cataloguer of both William and Marguerite Zorach's prints, this print was dated ca. 1920, but an impression offered at auction in 2003 has just come to my attention which was signed and dated 1916 by Zorach. For a discussion of this important print, see my article in Journal of the Print World, April, 2017, pg.13. Despite reservations, I deferred to Burke's 1920 date when writing the article, but the now confirmed date of 1916 feels right. As Burke also mentions, there exists a photograph in a file compiled by Sinclair Hitchings at the Boston Public Library of a third impression printed on the back of a batik owned by a Zorach family member.
