Fish by Norman Gorbaty, Amer., (1932-2020)
Pen and Bistre Ink Drawing, 1979, 14-11/16 x 19-1/2, sheet 16 x 21, slight water stain along length of right margin just touching signature lower right margin corner, on a full sheet of cream laid WORTHY watermarked paper. A bold and visceral drawing by Gorbaty, who was equally at home with painting, drawing, sculpture and printmaking. A student of Gabor Peterdi, Albers and Louis Kahn at Yale, Gorbaty forged a successful career as illustrator and graphic designer while raising a family. He never stopped working. At age 87 after a tragic home & studio fire, he'd begun to work again until his passing in 2020. His deep feeling for both living things and the forces of nature is evident in the decades long series of complex and elegant ink drawings he produced.
