"Anita (A Daughter of the Slums)" by Eugene Higgins, Amer., (1874-1958)
Etching, 1912, L.C. 197, 5-3/16 x 3-3/4, Ed. of at least 2, signed and dated in plate upper left and signed in pencil with title and annotation "2 prints Anita" at bottom margin edge, tack holes to margin edges all around from drying, inky fingerprint to left margin edge center, on smooth stiff cream wove paper. This may be an earlier state of the print as an impression in the collection of the Whitney seems to show stronger dark passages, but this could be attributed to differences in inking as well. The tiny image on the Whitney's website does not expand, and so is useless for any detailed study or comparison. A wonderful character study with a social message.
