"A Glimpse in New Hampshire" by James D. Smillie, Amer. (1833-1909)
Etching, ca. 1860-80, etched by James D. Smillie after the oil by Asher B. Durand, ed. unknown, published in" The Ladies Register", image 4-7/8 x 6-3/4, signed in pencil by both James Smillie and by Asher B. Durand, on a smooth white chine colle laid on what seems to be a recycled cream wove backing sheet. Although the Durand signature does not read as well as Smillie's in these digital photos, it is crisp and clearly legible, though likely written with a harder pencil. There are a few tiny spots of foxing and a line of toning to the support sheet showing at top and bottom of the chine, not affecting the image. Rare and unusual thus pencil signed by both artists.
