"Untitled Abstraction", by Alberto Magnelli, Italian, (1888-1971)
Color Woodcut, ca. 1950-70?, Ed. unknown, but 18 impressions for artists and collaborators, 10-1/2 x 8-1/8, signed and numbered and annotated 18/H.C., (Hors Commerce) in pencil, on cream laid simili japan paper, just slightly lightened within the mat opening. Magnelli's reductive use of his characteristic branched shape revealing the color of the paper set against the warm reddish brown at left and blue at right, is surprisingly gratifying, with particularly complimentary use of the wood grain texture. There is a catalogue raisonne of the artist's prints, but I found the catalogue language confusing regarding the edition, so I'm sticking with what I can at least verify written on this beautiful impression.
