"The Coolest Spot in New England-Summit of Mt. Washington" by Winslow Homer, Amer., (1836-1910)
1870, published in Harper's Bazaar 7/23/70, ed. unknown, G.217, 13-3/4 x 9-1/8, on thin warm white wove paper. Homer's hundreds of memorable wood engraved illustrations for Harpers Weekly, Gleason's and Ballou's Pictorial, as well as other periodicals offer a candid insight into day to day life in 19th century America with an unmatched range and relatability. One might compare him favorably to a combination of Norman Rockwell and Andrew Wyeth in the 20th century.
