"Segeste" by Samuel Colman, Amer., (1832-1920)

Etching, ca. 1885, ed. unknown, 3-11/16 x 4-7/8, printed in brown ink on cream laid paper, top margin trimmed with small creases to tip of top left corner. A single figure riding a burro on a high mountain trail between rocky craigs with the Greek Doric Temple of Segeste, ca. 420 BC visible in the distance. Segeste is located in Sicily, with a long history and confluence of cultures  confirmed by archeologic excavations. It was also the site of an important battle led by Garbaldi in the quest for Italian unification. The ancient temple overlooks the valley near the Gulf of Castellamare.
