Krishna Reddy (b. 1925)
La Vague (The Wave)
Color Etching, ca. 1963, Ed. of 80, signed, titled and numbered in pencil, 14-5/8 x 18-9/16, on cream paper. There is scattered foxing in the margins and a hint of water stain to the lower left corner. Krishna Reddy, born in India, and now in the U.S., carries on the innovative legacy of his mentor William Stanley Hayter, and was the former co-director of Atelier17 for many years. Reddy is the author of the important technical study and instructional text: Simultaneous Color Viscosity Printing, the technique pioneered by Hayter and carried to new heights by Reddy, in which complex color etchings are printed all at once from one plate instead of carefully registering and overprinting a separate intaglio plate for each color. This is a beautiful impression of this plate, with a grand sweeping gesture, subtle color harmonies and intricate details.
